Founded in 2010, the Younger Member Forum (YMF) of the Birmingham Branch ASCE was created to offer opportunities to help younger members 35 years of age or younger to:
make friends in the profession, grow their careers, and develop as leaders in their communities. - ASCE
The YMF recognizes that younger civil engineers are the future of the profession and attempts to provide a range of opportunities that help bridge the gap between students of all levels and the long-standing members of the professional civil engineering community.
YMF President's Message
I am looking forward to a great year with the ASCE Younger Member Forum! The purpose of ASCE is to promote the civil engineering profession and its values in both the field and the community. The organization provides a unique opportunity for young professionals to transition from student members to branch members and understand the value of an ASCE membership. The Younger Member Forum assists young professionals by providing opportunities to meet other civil engineers and fully develop as a professional in their careers. In addition, we give back to the community by interacting with students at local colleges and K-12 schools. At the college level, we provide students with resources to assist them as they enter into the civil engineering field and encourage them to continue their involvement in ASCE. At the K-12 level, we have an opportunity to expose students to engineering through hands-on activities and encourage them to consider a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. An ASCE membership provides professionals with continued learning in the field of civil engineering, an extensive network, a chance to positively impact the lives of students, and the opportunity to give back to the community through volunteering and outreach projects. At the ASCE Younger Member Forum, we aim to promote these values and instill the significance of an ASCE membership in our members.
The goals for this year include increasing membership and involvement of younger members, increasing the number of activities with the ASCE student chapter at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and participating in pre-college outreach projects at local schools in the Birmingham area. During the upcoming year, we have meetings, socials, and volunteer opportunities planned for our members. Join us at our next event for an opportunity to connect with Birmingham Branch members and other younger members or volunteer at one of our outreach projects at local schools to positively impact college and K-12 students. I look forward to serving as the Younger Member Forum president this year and implementing these ideas to grow the chapter!
