The Birmingham Branch of ASCE provides value to members and increases public awareness of the civil engineering profession by providing this website, by having a presence on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter, and by utilizing Constant Contact. These efforts are in line with our mission statement:
For the greater Birmingham area, provide value to members, promote the profession of civil engineering, and serve the public good by: bringing attention to the services provided by civil engineers, reaching out to area students to encourage interest in a civil engineering career, and educating members and the public about the state of the infrastructure and sustainable practices.
Once again, the 2013-2014 fiscal year began with an ambitious plan. We have the following committees & committee chairs established, with responsibilities and goals for the upcoming year: Infrastructure, Membership, Pre-College Outreach, Program, Public Relations, Scholarship and Student Chapter. Through the leadership of the Birmingham Branch and efforts of these Committees, we will succeed in accomplishing our goals as a part of ASCE. Listed below are the two primary initiatives of the branch:
- The Infrastructure Committee will lead efforts in updating the Infrastructure Report Card, through the initial development of a Local Infrastructure Report Card (IRC). The branch has already submitted a proposal to ASCE Nationals for a State Public Affairs Grant (SPAG) to assist in funding the committee efforts. Committee members will identify & meet with designated contacts, compile research efforts and finalize a local IRC update by the summer of 2014. The committee will then plan to distribute the final update, to the general public, through a variety of means.
- The Program Committee will conduct a half-day seminar, on December 3rd, worth a total of four (4) professional development hours. The topic will be Regions Field, with presenters being professionals involved in the project. An Engineering Ethics session will also be included within this event. Proceeds from the event will help support branch outreach efforts.
We look forward to seeing you at one of our many upcoming events: the annual golf tournament, Birmingham Barons baseball games, socials, site walks, seminars, and our monthly Branch meetings.
